Restructure and re-calibration of the CIPAF rain water canal that runs under the SS463 state highway
Municipalities of Osoppo, Majano and Buia, Udine, Italy
YEAR
2007-2011
CLIENT
Private
ASSIGNMENT
Architectural Design: Veronica Rossi Architects and Delta Engineering Studio
Safety Management: Veronica Rossi Architects
LOT SIZE
15000 m²
The project entailed the stretch of storm water canal from the Industrial Zone after it has passed a depuration process and up to the point where it crosses under the state highway.
Sudden and violent storms in which large amounts of rain fall in a short time had created problems with overflowing; the construction of new levees was approved along with the expansion of the canal in the pertinent area.
Firstly the canal bed was cleared of debris and silt and cleaned and then the walls were raised to contain eventual flood waters. Three different operations were carried out in the different zones through which the canal passes. The approach was dictated by the landscape and the intended use of the adjoining areas.
The first section is situated in the area where the canal leaves the depuration plant and passes through agricultural areas. Here the levees were raised using natural stone on both sides of the canal. In the central section, which passes through an agricultural area on one side, the levee was continued; along the industrial side, a concrete structure was built to raise the bank. The wall is connected to the existing artificial canal bed with an added safety rail.
In the last stretch of the canal, on both riverbanks, the banks are made of reinforced concrete with a safety rail. Safety rail have been added to both sides of the canal close to the collection tank, on both sides of the highway.
The flow of the water was directed towards three large pipes. When the water level rises, the flow of the water is naturally directed towards the raised sluice gate which was substantially widened to accommodate excess water.
