Design and Project Management
Life and death, darkness and light, these were the themes addressed to create a contemplative place for reflection, prayer and meditation.
Given the vast range of materials available for tombs and headstones means having a multitude of colours and tonalities to choose from depending on the architectural effect you want to achieve. Added to this the surface of the stone can be treated in many different ways to achieve different effects including a honed, brushed or flamed finish.
The treatment of the joints is extremely important both from an aesthetic and technical point of view. Serious consideration has to be given to these joints which are designed using full scale drawings. A tombstone is not just about the materials – natural light which becomes an integral part of it is just as important. The ever changing reflections, depending on the angle of the sun and the effects of the seasons inevitably alter the surface of the stone. Earthly life and the afterlife are symbolized by a cross carved into the granite of the headstone which seems to “vibrate” with natural light.
