CT Private Residence

This is a typical Friulian country house, with strong ties to farming traditions. It was built in the mid 1800’s and has been in the family for more than a century, having been passed down from father to son. It is now the property of a young couple who are in the process of expanding.
The L-shaped property consists of two sections: the main part which has always been used for residential purposes and the secondary one which was once used as a barn and has now been annexed to the main residence.
The main building was originally built in local stone, woven like an embroidery on facades that are punctuated by rigorously aligned large windows. During the renovation process, the framework was reinforced with steel and concrete making the building anti-seismic.
The preservation and restoration of all the characteristic elements of the building was an essential part of the project and this included the original stonework, brick arches and window grates. All dispersive surfaces were insulated internally so as to maintain the aesthetics of the external facades. A dry-wall process using lightweight materials was used on the walls as it adapts better to the irregular surfaces present in old properties.
The finishes, mainly in neutral tones, were selected to give prominence to the existing materials, rich in history and building traditions.

The original structure was a rural building used as a tool shed and hayloft from the 70s.
The building resembled a cement warehouse, on half was double volume and the other was divided over two stories, with two central supporting columns to hold up the roof. A few structural changes were carried internally but the overall form of the property was left unaltered.
The transformation took its cue from the existing spaces. The kitchen and living room and dining area was located in the huge double volume space while the bedrooms were established on the first floor. These two areas are joined by a spiral staircase in steel which twists its way around a pillar. It makes an impactful architectural statement both because of its design and the finish.
An overhead walkway that leads from the top of the staircase to the west side of the house and boasts spectacular panoramic views, was built over the dining room and kitchen. In order not to obscure the view of the space below, the floor was made of transparent glass.
The décor and finishes create a modern contrast of light and dark. This theme was continued in the choice of grey resin flooring.

N+D Private House

The architectural project in question was a house dating from the ’50s which at the time of construction was considered very characteristic both for its form and bold colors.
This is a family home with sentimental value, handed down through two generations which for their historical, social and cultural context were diametrically opposed. On the one hand, the austerity and the classicism of the postwar years on the other the simplicity and modernity of the current times.
Although the exterior shell was maintained, some significant changes were carried out starting with a drastic improvement to the home’s energy efficiency.
An absolute white theme was rigorously pursued, both internally and externally. Candid white surfaces are a recurring element and have been associated with very modern, lacquered and polished materials and wall finishes. Similarly furniture and furnishings continue this aspect of purity and rigor with just a few bursts of color to add character.

From historical documentation, it is estimated that this impressive building dates back to the early 1800s. It is part of a larger complex of similar looking buildings that are made entirely using local materials, typical of the Friuli region. The building had had substantial structural work done on it following the powerful earthquake which had struck the region in 1976. These renovations, while strengthening the structure, had marred the original architectural characteristics.
The project’s objective was to retain the solid work done by the original constructors and reduce, where possible, the impact of the rather coarse modern renovations and replace them using a more respectful approach.
A cleanup of the architecture was the first step in order to return the building to its origins. The second step was to accentuate any new additions.
The client requested huge open spaces so it was possible to admire the features and details of the house at a glance. To this end, a section of the east side was opened up, creating a double volume kitchen from which one can admire the imposing exposed wooden beams. A living room and dining room was also planned for this floor featuring a massive central fireplace called a fogolar. A modern steel staircase links the floors and wraps around a concrete wall creating a focal point.
Contrary to the hospitable open spaces of the ground floor rooms, those on the upper floors have a more conservative feel. The bedrooms, though traditional, are equipped with every comfort and boast luxurious finishes.
An outdoor swimming pool with adjoining sauna, placed in an adjacent stone structure with features similar to those of the main building, was also planned for the exterior. High stone perimeter walls protect the privacy of the garden which features an iron pergola.
